• The Office of the Accountant General started functioning from the year 1828 inside the Fort St. George, Madras along with the State Secretariat.
  • As per the available records Shri R.W. LODWICK held the charge of Accountant General from 1873-76.
  • This Office catered to the composite state of Madras Presidency consisting of Madras and Andhra till the bifurcation of Madras Presidency into the states of Madras (name since altered as Tamilnadu) and Andhra Pradesh  during the year 1950.
  • 118 Accountants General have headed this Office, one of the oldest and prestigious institutions in India.
  • Shri Sarvepalli RadhaKrishnan, the then Vice President of India, laid the foundation stone for this Office in the present location on 2nd June 1954
  • The Office moved to the present location during the year 1956.
  • When the Indian Audit & Accounts Department was restructured during the year 1984, separate Audit and Accounts Offices were formed and since then, this Office functions as the Office of the Accountant General(A&E), Tamilnadu, Chennai.
