Master of Population Studies

 

The one years (full-time) Master degree course is designed to provide high level of understanding of population sciences including an in-depth knowledge of the linkages between population and various socio-economic, health and environmental factors. This course provides foundation to Post-Graduate students in population studies/demographic issues and provides a comprehensive idea to conduct future research in various aspects related to population.

Eligibility

Candidates having M.A./M.Sc. degree from a recognized university in India or abroad with a minimum of 55% (50% for reserved candidates) of aggregate marks/equivalent grade in the subjects; Anthropology, Bio-statistics, Development Studies, Economics, Geography, Health Statistics, Mathematics, Population Studies, Political Science, Population Education, Psychology, Rural Development, Social Work, Sociology, and Statistics will be eligible for admission.  Candidates having Master degree, other than subjects specified above and having at least two years of experience in Population and Health related field are also eligible to apply. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission provided if they secure financial support from any outside agency.

Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by September 30th of every year.

The upper age limit of application is 28 years as on June 30th of every year. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS reserved categories as per Government of India rules only.

Selection Criteria for MPS Course

The admission to M.P.S. course is through a two-stage process: (i) Online Test, (ii) a Personal Interview. The Online Entrance Test will comprise objective type questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of Entrance Test will consist of Basic General Knowledge, Logical Reasoning, English Grammar, Basic Mathematics, Population, Health and Social Science issues. The test venue will be notified in the Admit Card. Based on the performance in the Online Test, shortlisted candidates will be called for personal interview at IIPS. Final selection will be based on the weighted average of scores of Online Test and personal interview.

Shortlisted candidates appearing for admission test are entitled to claim sleeper class train fare by the shortest route on production of original tickets and in case of road journey normal fare will be paid only for travel by public transport run by a Government body.

Fellowship

 Each selected Indian student will be awarded a Government of India Fellowship @ Rs. 5,000/- per month.

  • Semester I: Two electives may be opted from each group, i.e. E1.1/1.2 & E2.1/E2.2
  • Semester II: Two electives may be opted from each group; i.e. E3.1/3.2/3.3 & 4.1/E4.2/4.3

Core courses: 72%; Elective courses: 28% Core papers cannot be changed. Elective paper can be changed if the student fails in an elective paper and submits his/her request in writing. $ Evaluation procedure for dissertation: Guide - 0.25, Presentation & Defense – 0.25, Content – 0.50. The grade for ‘presentation & defense must also be given independently by each member, and submitted to the controller of examinations independently. For content, the director may appoint a three-member committee for each dissertation. The three members should independently evaluate the dissertation and independently submit the grades to the controller of examinations.
