LoSMINM Project

Longitudinal Survey of Maternal and Infant Nutrition in Maharashtra (LoSMINM)

About Project Objectives Methodology

About Project

The role of maternal nutrition on the growth and development of the fetus during pregnancy and early infancy is of paramount importance. Inadequate maternal weight gain during early pregnancy indicates sub-optimal maternal nutrition and has been a specific cause of low birth weight (LBW). It is attributable to the effect on both gestation period and fetal growth velocity.

There is a dearth of longitudinal community-based studies on maternal nutrition in rural areas in India, especially in the western part of India, where women have a double burden of malnourishment. LoSMINM was initiated by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) with a research grant from MOHFW in July 2021.

The study will be conducted in 10 selected villages in the Raigad district in Maharashtra for four years.  Our long-term plan is to raise financial resources and continue the scientific exploration of health behaviours and related outcomes. Adopting these villages for health surveillance systems could answer several policy questions and programs undertaken by the Government of Maharashtra. This will also help students of IIPS to learn the data collection for their research.
