Doctor of Philosophy

 

The direct doctoral program is designed to prepare the students for professional leadership in population field as well as for pursuing academic and non-academic career.

Eligibility Criteria

 Candidates having M.Phil. in Population Studies, M.Phil in Bio-statistics & Demography, Master of Population Studies (MPS), MA/MSc in Population Studies, M.Sc in Bio-statistics & Demography from a recognized university with at least 55% (50% for reserved candidates) of aggregate marks/equivalent grade are eligible to apply.  Students who have qualified UGC/CSIR-JRF or any other national level fellowship are encouraged to apply for this programme. Eligible foreign candidate can also apply for admission, provided they secure financial support from any outside agency/government.
 Candidate who have already passed the qualifying examination and those who have already appeared/shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, admission of the candidate will be cancelled if s/he fails to furnish the final examination result by September 30, 2021.
 
The upper age limit is 30 years as on June 30th of every year. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS categories as per Government of India rules.  

Selection Criteria

The admission to Ph.D. programme is through a three-stage process; Online Entrance Test, research proposal writing, and personal interview. The Online Entrance Test will consist of objective type questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of Online Entrance Test will consist of questions on English, Logical Reasoning, Statistics, Mathematics, Bio-statistics, Research Methodology, Population Studies, Demography and Epidemiology. The test venue will be notified in the Admit Card. Based on the performance in the Online Test, shortlisted candidates will be called for research proposal writing and personal interview at IIPS. Final selection will be based on the weighted average of scores of Online Test, research proposal and personal interview. The Institute will not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the test/personal interview.

Reservation

 Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS will be considered as per the Government of India norms.

Sponsored Candidates

Eligible in-service candidates and foreign candidates (with M.Phil. Or Pre-Doctoral Coursework in Population Studies/Demography) with financial support from UGC /ICSSR/ Foreign funding may be considered for admission to the Ph.D. program without entrance test during the academic year.Officials working in Government departments, research institutions, universities, medical colleges, and non-governmental organizations can also be sponsored for being considered for admission. However, the selection is done as per selection criteria.Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission provided they secure financial support from outside agency. Processing fee is not charged from the foreign candidates while submission of completed application forms. Also, admission test is not conducted for the foreign candidates and admission is offered directly if the candidate fulfills the eligibility criteria of the Institute.

Number of Seats

Number of seats for UGC/CSIR-JRF or any other national level fellowship awardees shall be decided by the admission committee.

Duration of Program

  • Ph.D. program is for a minimum duration of two years to a maximum of six years.
  • Extension beyond six years may be considered for one more year for In-service candidates or those who have opted for part-time after three years of regular research work.
  • The women candidates and persons with disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed for a relaxation of two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration.
  • The women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave once in the entire duration of Ph.D. as per the prevailing UGC guidelines (currently 240 days). Male candidates are eligible for Paternity Leave as per Govt. of India norms (currently 15 days) issued from time to time at full rates of fellowship once during the tenure of their award.

Fellowship

The selected Indian students are awarded a Government of India fellowship initially for one year, which can be extended on yearly basis as per the rules of the Institute. Each eligible candidate with NET qualification for lectureship only either in Population Studies or its interdisciplinary subjects is awarded the Government of India fellowship (at present @ Rs. 25,000/- per month for first and second years and Rs. 28,000/- per month for the third and fourth years). Each fellowship carries a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- for the first two years and Rs. 20,500/- for the third and fourth years.
The candidates without NET qualification for lectureship are awarded the Government of India fellowship as per rule (currently @ Rs. 12,000/- p.m. for first and second years and Rs. 14,000/- p.m. for third and fourth years respectively with an annual contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/-). In addition, UGC-JRF and other fellowship holders will also be considered for admission as per availability of seats.
