The International Institute for Population Sciences ( IIPS), Mumbai being a premier Teaching, Training and Research Institute in the Asia and the Pacific Region has a full-fledged Institutional Ethical Review Board (IRB). IIPS-IRB is chaired by an outside expert and members from different disciplines, like medical sciences, legal expert, social activists, community representatives and representatives of non-government organizations. All the research projects of the Institute or outside organizations having Institute’s faculty as research partner, involving human subjects are reviewed and approved. The committee ensures that research involving humans is conducted according to the legal, institutional and professional ethical guidelines focusing at privacy, confidentiality, voluntary participation and human subject protection. In fact, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has published detailed guidelines on the composition and responsibilities of IRBs and established ethical guidelines for biomedical research on human subjects (Published in 2006). IRB at Institute is following the same rules and regulations as suggested by ICMR.
